It was 1968, muscle cars had evolved into big, heavy, option loaded, luxury machines priced well above the budget of the average person. No longer were they the lean, mean, street sleepers of years past. ![]()
Plymouth changed all that in 1968! First introduced in 1968, the Plymouth roadrunner was based on the Belvedere/Satellite B-body line of luxury cars. But if you purchased a Roadrunner you could forget the chrome, fancy bucket seats, carpets or the other numerous amenities found in muscle cars of the era or the Roadrunner's Belvedere/Satellite cousins - this car was a stripped down, inexpensive, "no frills, high thrills", ground stomping performer! Conservatively, the stock (almost bulletproof) 383 engine generated 335hp @ 5200 rpm and 425 lb-ft @ 3400 rpm. This stock machine would do 0-60 in 7.1 seconds and complete the quarter mile in 15 seconds @ 96mph! At a base price of $2,896, this kind of performance made the 1968 Roadrunner a sales success selling 44,599 units.
The Roadrunner wasn't a fragile car either. While the outstanding performance of the 383 embarrassed a lot of 440 owners, the entire car was designed for some serious street work, capable of withstanding some of the worst bumps and grinds. It's no wonder the Roadrunner was a favorite vehicle of moonshiners - it was faster and tougher than most police cars. So stay a while, look around and enjoy yourself. I've posted many pictures of this wonderful car. If you have additional information regarding the 1968 Roadrunner please e-mail me with the information and I will be happy to post it. Meep Meep! |
